Hi guys. Glitter Girl back on A-Siblings. I love WBD (World Book Day) so much that I’m now making a post just about it!
Today, we’ll talk about its history, book recommendations, why we should celebrate and fun activities!
History:
World Book Day, celebrated annually on April 23rd by UNESCO since 1995, promotes reading, publishing, and copyright. It originated from a Catalan tradition honouring author Miguel de Cervanteson his death date. The date also commemorates writers such as William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, making it a significant international literary celebration.
Inspired by Spanish writer Vicente Clavel in 1922 to honor Cervantes and boost book sales, first celebrated on Oct 7, 1926, before moving to April 23 (Cervantes’ death date) in 1930.
World Book Day was inaugurated in the UK in 1998 by Prime Minister Tony Blair at the Globe Theatre, following the global UNESCO initiative launched in 1995. Celebrated on the first Thursday in March, it aims to promote reading for pleasure, distributing over 15 million £1 book tokens annually to children.
Although international World Book Day is 23 April, the UK moved its celebration to the first Thursday in March to ensure it falls within term time and avoids clashing with Easter or St. George’s Day.
